How To Make Espresso With Instant Coffee

Instant coffee cannot make machine-pulled espresso because it has already been brewed and dried. Dissolve it in a small amount of hot water for a concentrated espresso-style drink, but it will not have the same extraction or crema as a fresh espresso shot.

Make concentrated instant coffee

  1. Choose instant coffee or a product labelled instant espresso and read its preparation directions.
  2. Measure it into a cup and add hot water gradually, using less than you would for a full mug.
  3. Stir until dissolved, then adjust the amount of water to taste.
  4. Use it as a coffee base or add milk for a latte-style drink.

For one product-specific example, NESCAFÉ Gold Espresso's US directions use one teaspoon with two fluid ounces of hot water. This is not a universal ratio; follow your product label.

Can instant replace espresso in recipes?

It can add coffee flavour, but differs in body and extraction. If a recipe depends on espresso, use a machine-pulled shot or suitable commercial concentrate, or adjust the recipe knowing instant coffee will taste different. Espresso machines are designed for ground coffee in the correct basket, not soluble granules. Some instant products foam, but that is not espresso crema.
